CD90135 RECOMMENDATION NO. LCR12871
INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS ACTS, 1946 TO 1976
SECTION 67
PARTIES: QUINNSWORTH (ENNIS) LIMITED
AND
IRISH DISTRIBUTIVE AND ADMINISTRATIVE TRADE UNION
SUBJECT:
1. Claim by the Union for an increase in basic pay for the goods
inward stores manager at the Ennis branch.
BACKGROUND:
2. The worker concerned is responsible for the overall running of
the goods inward store and reports directly to the store manager.
The amount of work and responsibility of a goods inward stores
manager is related to the size of the store and its turnover.
Basic rates of pay are negotiated locally and there is provision
for a plus payment depending on local conditions. The issue of a
review of basic pay was raised by the worker in late 1988 and by
the Union in early 1989. The Company rejected the claim for an
increase in the basic rate of pay and the matter was referred on
5th December, 1989 to the conciliation service of the Labour
Court. A conciliation conference was held on 7th February, 1990
at which no agreement was reached and the matter was referred on
15th February, 1990 to a full hearing of the Labour Court which
took place on 10th April, 1990 in Limerick.
UNION'S ARGUMENTS:
3. 1. The post of goods inward stores manager is a key position
at any of the Company's retail outlets. The scale of
responsibility of the person in charge of the goods inward
store is directly related to the value of stock turned over.
The value of stock intake at the Ennis outlet is approaching
#10 million per annum and this puts considerable
responsibility on the goods inward stores manager.
