This dispute concerns claims made by the union on behalf of 36 canteen assistants. The union is claiming equal pay with five named comparators on their behalf. The list of names of both the claimants and the comparators and their job titles together with their rates of pay are at Appendix 1. The claimants allege that their job involves like work with the comparators and claim that they should have remuneration equal to that of the comparators. The union referred claims under the Anti-Discrimination (Pay) Act 1974 on behalf of 31 of these claimants on the 26th March, 1996 and subsequently made claims on behalf of five other claimants. The last of these was received by the Equality Officer on the 12th December, 1996. All of these claims were investigated by the Equality Officer at the same joint hearings.
